Positive: Great location in Mount Aso in the heart of town. The onsen is a sulfur bath which leaves your skin feeling refreshed and Moisturised. There is a very conducive sitting room with fireplace and ground coffee provided. We were able to fit a family of 5 in the tatami room which is very unusual for hotels / ryokans. The tatami room is very comfortable. Nepalese staff are all English speaking and can help with translation.

Negative: It’s best if you stay over a weekend because a fantastic kaiseki meal is provided on weekends but for weekdays there is simpler fare.

Positive: We could fit a family of 5 pax in one room which is very hard to find in Aso . The big family room had a toilet, en-suite and toilet in the room with excellent WiFi.

Negative: It will be nice touch to provide fresh aso milk for tea and coffee in the common area by the fireside as there is freshly ground coffee machine providing excellent coffee. Also English breakfast tea bags would be a nice little extra for non coffee drinkers. Green tea was provided.

Summary: A wonderful stay in a comfortable traditional ryokan with just the right amount of modern conveniences

Positive: A quaint and beautiful onsen ryokan located in Aso. The room we got on the second floor was large and comfortable. The ryokan has a public onsen and 5 private onsens (reserved for guests after 9pm) located in an adjoning building. Dinner was amazing as expected from a ryokan. We used the private onsen twice!

Negative: Access to the ryokan is via some country roads that are quite tight and could be challenging if encountering another car - would rent a smaller car in the future. The ryokan doesn't have an elevator so carrying a heavy suitcase up to the room was a challenge for the staff who showed us to our room. Some of the private onsens were a little dark though it might have been a design choice.

Summary: Beautiful ryokan with private onsen facilities. Would stay again!

Positive: Staff at check-in and check-out is able to communicate in English. The private onsen bath rooms are fantastic. Dinner and breakfast that are included in half board package are fresh and delicious!
