A cabin right out of “Deliverance.” Inside a clean cozy retreat from the world. A fully equipped kitchen, (with more than just salt, pepper and sugar); a queen bed, large bathroom, propane barbecue, fast wi-fi, blue tooth speaker and a mesmerizing view of the Margaree “mountains” and the Margaree River. A consideration for some might be that presence of our new house on the property which partially obstructs the view. There is slight slant to the kitchen floor that many guests consider quaint, but if you're unsteady it might be a consideration. There's a Co-op Grocery/liquor store just one minute away.
I believe my happiest guests are those who are familiar with the camping lifestyle but are now seeking something more comfortable. The Shackteau offers everything you need.
The bathroom is spacious with a full tub/shower, vanity and toilet.
There is a comfortable queen size bed.
Everything about the cabin is designed to be easy to clean and maintain.
If you're looking for privacy, a serene view and proximity to everything that western Cape Breton offers, I don't think you can do better than a stay at the Shackteau.
The wifi is the best available in rural Nova Scotia. (you can stream video or FaceTime/Zoom without difficulty). Fibre is due to be installed in 2023.
The only concern I share with guests is the limited capacity of the old septic system. For that reason I ask guests to be aware of how much they send down the pipes and take a few measures to reduce the flow. It's not a burden, just a concern, like in many older country buildings.

Summary: John was a great host. The place was clean, well equipped, quiet and confortable. It’s the first time a host leaves food and wine, beer… it was a very nice touch. I recommend strongly this place.

Summary: We spent 3 nights at John's Shackteau on the Cabot trail. Can't say enough about his helping nature, and quality of accommodation for our needs. The description in the listing is spot on, communication with John throughout was easy and prompt. He provided all the guidance and pointers we needed for the area. He had bread, eggs, tea/coffee, butter & basics for us! He even helped get us an appointment with a tire place since we had missed how worn down our tires were. The view from the deck is gorgeous. The view from a few feet to the left is even better! Place is close to the west entrance to Cape Breton NP. Everything went about as well as it could. One note of caution: as everyone knows, bugs there during the summer can be plentiful and aggressive!

Summary: This property is clean and well-appointed. The owners were welcoming and I felt at home. The property is as-advertised and is a little quirky. But what can you expect from a place called the the Shackteau? I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again if I'm back in the neighbourhood.

Summary: The listing was accurate and the ~shackteau~ exceptionally clean. It has every last kitchen doodad, towel, fan, and flashlight for your comfort. John is a worldly guy with an extensive knowledge of Cape Breton that comes from a lifetime of visiting and a career teaching biology on the island. We’ve never stayed in such a well-provisioned rental before! And anyways, the grocery store is only a two minute drive for all your particular needs. This was a great place to do a week of (remote) work, interspersed with long bike rides and trips to the beach.
