Positive: Breakfast should be improved and limited choices of food selection. The style is more of family style and cater for children. Took a long time to order one simple plain omelette bcoz the fry pan is too small and the electric cooking utensils is poor slowing down the process. The bonus is the private bath available in this property.

Positive: The partial open air onsen can be booked for no charge. It feels great to have a warm bath with the cold air. However you must check in early to do this or slots may book out. There are free activities such as matcha making, Dango making and Sake tasting. However you also must check in early to do this as activities close 6 pm. Luggage storage at front desk is available. Price is great for the room size and experience. The ryokan is very spacious especially the lobby. As it is far from town centre it’s very quiet and relaxing.

Negative: Location is not very central to town centre . Definitely book a free shuttle from Kaga station as walking from Yamanaka town takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Check if your booking includes dinner. We did not have a dinner reservation and ended up needing to walk to town at night to eat dinner, it was very dark. You cannot add dinner the night of arrival, so book it on the ryokan website if Booking.com doesn’t have the option. Wish activities could be open after 6pm. Check in is 4pm, with shuttles running hourly from Kaga. We arrived after 5pm and after checking in, didn’t have time to do any activities. One male staff member seemed to run the place more like an army camp than a relaxing ryokan. Maybe it was the language barrier, but when sitting in the lobby area felt like we were being watched. We were eating and drinking and collected our rubbish after. Not sure if we were doing something wrong.

Positive: Luxury boutique hotel with spacious traditional Japanese style rooms with a wonderful view overlooking the river, all the amenities necessary. It's about 30 minutes from Kagaonsen shinkansen station, the hotel provides a free shuttle service. You are welcomed with a shower of paper cherry tree petals and there are free snacks and bathroom amenities in the lobby. The private outdoor onsen baths are really pleasant and can also be used without a reservation late at night or early in the morning. The staff was kind and warm and the activities are various: you can prepare your own matcha and cook dango and rice cakes. A free drink and snacks are graciously offered in the evening. I didn't have dinner nor breakfast at the hotel, I walked to the closest konbini, which took 20-25 minutes back and forth.

Negative: Everything is perfect, but I don't think it's worth staying for long for its seems there is not much to do around.

Summary: Elegant, calm and luxurious, a perfect place to rest aside to the city

Positive: We enjoyed the onsen experience. The staff were friendly and advising us how to do everything.

Negative: We didn't get there til after 5pm and the senbei making stations were closing but they were keen for us to try so we felt a bit pushed into trying when we hadn't even got our luggage in from the car yet. They were very friendly and probably thought we were odd as we didn't know what to do.
