Positive: Lovely hotel and great staff. Fabulous pool and gardens. Water taxi to the old city much appreciated.

Negative: Ate in the restaurant twice and my food was cold on both occasions. The hot food at the breakfast buffet was cold as well as the hot plates weren't lit, so nothing stayed hot. Some of the cleaning not perfect. Some windows in communal areas were dirty and our bathroom had a couple of minor dirty marks that looked like they'd been there a while. So frustrating as it's a lovely hotel.

Summary: 4 and a half stars. Could be 5 star easily with a bit of attention to cleaning and cold food.

Positive: The beautiful setting!!! Understated elegant. Great restraunts. The fabulous boat ride up the Douro river.

Negative: Lack of light in the bathroom. Need better lighting, brighter. Lounge chairs by pool are tired. The landscape by pond near pool needs attention. Wait staff great. Spa staff a little stiff.

Positive: A hotel in a beautiful and secluded setting with a mixture of historical and modern architecture. The room was tastefully decorated and the bed and pillows extremely comfortable. Everything about our stay was aimed at making us feel special and pampered. We had a view overlooking the Douro River and felt transported to another world and time.

Positive: Beautiful grounds and staff were lovely. Breakfast was exceptional as were both the Terroire restaurant for lunch (we ate there twice!) and the Michelin restaurant for dinner. The interior design and grounds are another level - really well thought out! We made use of the boat charter which was a lovely touch.

Negative: There was a building wide issue with aircon and we had to ask for a fan (rather than one being offered to Us) - which was very much needed as I am 8 months pregnant. This appeared to be a known issue but not something they were proactively managing which was a bit strange. We had to get up to go and ask for service by the pool for drinks which I wouldn’t expect at a five star. I would have expected more complimentary items in the mini bar given the room rate. Our bath tub was lovely and deep but the handles were a bit lose so some maintenance wouldn’t go a miss.

Positive: Lovely location by the river, close proximity to city centre, cool decor

Negative: The breakfast time slot was short, for the price I expected the facilities to be better, the spa is pretty basic, it’s not a bad hotel and we enjoyed our stay but I’m sure for the price you’d find much better in Porto
