Summary: My husband and I went for our 2 year wedding anniversary. It was not for us, and we would not go back or recommend it. We ended up changing our flight and leaving a day early, that is how uncomfortable we were. The biggest issue for us was that we did not feel comfortable relaxing inside of the rooms, even in the beachfront villa we ended up upgrading to, hoping that the issues in our first, smaller villa wouldn’t persist. Unfortunately they did - and by they I mean the cockroaches in the bathroom. This is unacceptable to us in a luxury resort that charges a $1600 card hold along with a $200+ non refundable tax at check in. All of the rooms at the resort are on the ground level, which probably accounts for a lot of the wildlife you will see in your rooms, including large spiders and a lot of mosquitoes. My husband and I are still recovering from the bites a week later as I write this review. The rooms roofs are thatched like island huts, so besides what also may be living up there, when a storm hits the roof degrades and sprays the thatch all around the room and bed. Playa del Carmen is suffering from the sargassum issue, it is really bad. You cannot swim in the ocean and it smells terrible. The best part of the hotel is the pool, but you are only there for a couple hours max a day. And you must watch two men with small wheelbarrows works tirelessly in the heat as they attempt to pick up the seaweed and haul it away from the beach past you by the pool. It’s depressing.

Summary: I can’t say enough about this place! It is amazing! The rooms are stunning. It’s one of the nicest places I’ve ever stayed. The staff are superb. Like over the top amazing. The butler service is attentive and incredible. The spa was lovely and the food is dreamy! I’ll definitely be visiting more Viceroy hotels because of this place!

Summary: We had such a lovely stay at the Viceroy and will definitely be back. Beautiful property. VERY quiet and private. If you’re looking for a private escape into luxury…. This is it! And the staff was really incredible. The only two things that weren’t clear in other reviews that would have been helpful for vacation planning: You are a good 15-20 minute cab ride from Playa Del Carmen and it’s a standard $400 pesos each way. There is no where else to eat nearby except the resort (which does have good food - I’m obsessed with their coconut lemongrass drink!), but there are no options at the viceroy that aren’t expensive. So you have to take your $800 pesos cab to and from Playa to grab dinner.

Noise from Nearby Properties While not within Viceroy’s control, loud parties from a neighboring resort disrupted our nights. The music was intense enough to shake the walls—challenging for those seeking a peaceful escape. 3. Area Atmosphere We expected a refined experience south of Cancun but found the vibe across the region geared more toward spring-break energy. It felt misaligned with our expectations. 4. Seaweed and Beach Conditions The beach was unusable due to heavy seaweed during our visit (March–October season). Swimming wasn’t an option, limiting us to the pool. 5. Lack of Local Alternatives Renting a car didn’t help. The surrounding area felt neglected—dusty streets, unpleasant odors, and nowhere comfortable to walk or dine. The beach was narrow and crowded. Bottom Line: The resort is lovely, but the environment around it made the experience fall short. If you’re looking for quiet luxury, better dining variety, and swimmable beaches, this may not be the best choice.

Summary: Service was EXCELLENT. We arrived to Cancún realizing our checked bag had been robbed of some sentimental and valuable items. The Viceroy staff set our trip back on the right trajectory and then some. The resort is intimate, tractable, and most of all… relaxing. It was exactly what we needed to start our trip. We were sad to leave. Highly recommend!

Summary: We seldom stay on property when we travel, choosing to venture out and explore. This trip, our plans were different. We just needed to chill and we’re so happy we chose The Viceroy to do so. The property is incredible. The villas are private and intimate. Natural vibes all around. But two specific things were just outstanding and noteworthy. Firstly, the food. Everything we ate was remarkable. Like trying to deconstruct the ingredients so we could cook it at home remarkable. In four days of meals there wasn’t a single thing we ate, or sipped, that wasn’t delicious. But above all was the service. The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful and so attentive that it elevated our experience beyond our expectations. We felt the love. 10/10. We’ll be back again.

Summary: I just returned from my stay at the Viceroy Playa Del Carmen. There is a lot to potentially like about this property. The staff in the restaurants and bar/pool area are probably some of the best I’ve ever experienced. The property is lush and we did massage treatments at the spa and they were outstanding. Now, for the bad - rats in my room - simply unacceptable for a hotel at this level. Really at any level. Crawling through the thatched roof and visible for brief moments after dark. I called and requested help, the hotel responded - they said they’d send someone, the problem seemed to abate for a night but then returned. I was only there for 5 nights and 2 out of 5 were heavily disrupted, the first 2 nights being ones where I didn’t really know what was going on. Really terrible experience - tough to sleep with that going on in your room. hotel staff did nothing to help the issue that had any permanence - it seemed like they may have put something outside the room that made noise to scare them away and then once that was removed, the problem came right back. They weren’t willing to relocate me. Front desk staff were pretty indifferent about everything. No way can I recommend the Viceroy to anyone who wants any sort of relaxation on vacation. I feel like I was robbed of the price I paid. Transportation arranged by the airport was low caliber with cars that had bad suspension and visible accident damage. Not worth it - taxis are easy to come by in playa.
