Positive: The location of the houses is incredibly beautiful because it is right on the beach. You can go directly from the house to the beach to go swimming and see the second largest coral reef in the world and the staff is very nice and fulfills your every wish. Tranqulity Beach Resort is perfect for relaxing and has the most beautiful location in the whole of Belize. You are isolated from the tourist life on the other part of the island.

Positive: From the outset, as you can see from the promo pic above, it feels like arriving in a quiet paradise. The staff, from Audi, Yaricson, Andre, and others want nothing but to make you comfortable, and your stay enjoyable. The restaurant/bar, on the water is a great place to hang out and all my meals were well prepared by chef Raynaldo, and delicious. Grab a cocktail, sit out on the deck, and take in sight and sounds of the off shore reef, that runs up the coast of Belize. It is at its closest point here, about 300m out. There is a continuous stretch of waves breaking over the reef and the sound of crashing surf drifts over the resort 24/7. This means that the water from the shore to the reef is normally calm and shallow, perfect for swimming and young children... almost like a private lagoon. It’s also perfect for safe casual snorkeling. Numerous reef fish hang out on the several coral heads, and you may see the occasional ray drift by. Larger fish hang out under the protection of the restaurant.

Negative: In the larger sense, there's almost nothing not to like. If you are looking for an all- inclusive full amenity resort, this is not the place for you. No pool, spa, planned activities, or shopping here. But there are plenty of those places stretching from San Pedro, up the Ambergris coastline. But if you are ok going farther up the coast, looking for a peaceful, relaxed, out-of-the-way, almost "bohemian" like vacation, then Tranquilty may be just the place. It's quiet in the "resort" sense the pace is relaxed, no clocks because time doesn't matter here... and it is sub-tropical beautiful. Having said that, Tranquility is not an easy place to get to. The most direct, comfortable way would be by water taxi from San Pedro. The trip is about 40km +/- and costs $100+ usd. The common means of transport in Ambergris is by "golf cart on steroids." They are everywhere, and most tourists use them. You can drive to the resort, and if you want to go anywhere or see anything else it is a good idea to rent one. But be forewarned... once out of San Pedro, there are literally no paved roads. Even past the high end resorts and villas outside San Pedro it is a bone-jarring, teeth-rattling drive. And as you proceed up the coast the roads only get narrower and bumpier. In the North American sense, these roads are likely the worst washboard, pot-holed, that you will ever travel on. As a result, the 30/40km trip will take 1-1/2 hrs, or more. At first glance, the large villas accommodations look beautiful. They are very spacious inside and comfortably furnished, if dated. They accommodate anywhere from 4 to 8 guests, priced accordingly. If you are the type that is happy to be in a beautiful, quiet locale, with a bed to sleep in, a beach chair to sit in, and who doesn't "sweat" the small stuff, you will be fine. I discovered that the resort changed ownership earlier this year.

Summary: Tranquility resort... good and getting better!

Positive: Great location at more remote north end of island with nice beach and easy access to shallow reef for beginner snorkeling and kayaking. Cabanas were very well built and spacious. Very friendly, welcoming, and helpful staff.

Negative: Kitchen facilities were minimal with just mini-fridge, coffee pot and microwave, so dependent on the resort dining options. The facilities need some basic repairs and TLC, but Tranquility has just reopened under new management.
