Positive: Great quiet secluded location in a converted stone barn. Very friendly host on a family run working farm. Cosy with the gas stove on during our stay in very cold weather. Great walking from the doorstep which backs on the UNESCO Geopark with the famed High- and Low Force waterfalls.
Negative: The driveway is a dirt and gravel track, with one steeper section. It is perfectly fine in any normal car, but we were a little concerned about snow which was forecast. This wasn't a problem as we were happy to leave the car at the farmhouse, and walk the 400yrds or so and well worth it for the location: just something for others to be aware of if staying in mid-winter!
Summary: Great out of the way location with great access to walking in the North Pennine hills.

Positive: Beautiful get away spot. Some great walks and very close to River Tees and Pennine way. We loved it hear. Quite remote, no neighbours. Stunning countryside. Highly recommend. Great value.
Negative: No washing machine but it was fine.
Summary: Exceptional stay in North Pennines. Unique property in middle of no-where.

Positive: Best feature of this house is the gas fire. It was warm, welcoming and cosy. Beds were comfortable.
Negative: A few issues: Hot water: Bathroom taps could do with the thermostatic mixer for the shower facility. It was very difficult to judge the correct mix. Almost burnt ourselves. Found the water fluctuated in temperature. The kitchen tap was totally useless for hot water. The boiler requires a pump to help it up from the ground level. It was quicker to boil a kettle. Cooking facilities need upgrading. Oven had no thermostatic control and also pots/pans supplied not in great shape. Couldn't find a non-stick pan to fry an egg and cutting tools all blunt. Tried to be clever and do a cooked breakfast but frankly more trouble than worth it and resulted in a lot of washing up with stuck burnt on foods. Better off buying ready meals and using the microwave or eating out. Fridge was tiny, so frequent shops probably needed. Owners could do with dropping a pile of gravel in the parking area outside the cottage or doing something more permanent. The car was sinking in mud, but we did travel in March and it was VERY wet. Beware, there is no WiFi (as advertised) and no mobile reception. We use '3', so can't vouch for other network providers. We did manage to get some reception, but you had to walk 100m to the south facing gate in the field in the rain. If you come here please plan your holiday in advance on where you want to go as once you are here there is no outside world. The TV was surprisingly good. Bring books, toys, games and DVD's or get bored. Lol...
Summary: A simple base. Satisfactory.

Positive: The location is idyllic. The cottage is well equipped, comfortable and cosy. We spent 7 nights there with our 1 year old and it was a really lovely, relaxing stay. Great to be able to go on family walks right from the property, Low Force waterfall is only 30 minutes walk away. The cottage was really warm, clean and had everything you will need for time away. Planning on returning in the future, but will bring a travel stair gate as with the living room being upstairs we did have to barricade the top of the stairs from curious little boys. Can't fault the cottage at all and everyone we met in Holwick was so wonderfully friendly.
Negative: Absolutely nothing, the stay was wonderful from start to finish.
Summary: Wish we'd booked 2 weeks instead of 1 :)

Positive: Lovely cosy cottage with lots of surrounding local walks along the river to the village and High Force. Great views of the sheep and mountains. well equipped.
Negative: Nothing really except we had to cut our long weekend short due to a several day power cut after a bad storm so no hot water or central heating but the gas fire hob and oven kept us warm upstairs.
Summary: Just idyllic!
