Positive: The cottage is in a lovely village with the most perfect pub, which is dog friendly. It is also ideally located within 20 minutes drive of both Kendal in one direction and Windermere in the other.

Negative: The main bathroom is at the bottom of the property.

Negative: No WiFi when we arrived and didn’t work until Wednesday. It was a known problem in the area for awhile and so we should have been informed before we arrived. There were no games in the cottage and only 3 toilet rolls for four people for a week.

Positive: Loved the views and quiet location.

Negative: Communication with the host was non existent once I arrived. I messaged numerous times, and used as many communication methods that I could find, but didn’t receive a single reply for my whole stay. I don’t normally need to message anyone, but the Wifi wouldn’t connect, which makes it hard to book taxis etc. the service wasn’t great out that way - no one’s fault there. I also wanted to turn some heating on as it was raining and cold. Again, no response at all.

Summary: The cottage has everything you could need and a great location.

Positive: Perfect retreat, location good for what we wanted. Kitchen was well equipped.

Negative: The bathroom was lovely but let down by the shower, which was lukewarm at best.

Positive: The location is great, quiet location with off road parking. Neighbours also very nice. The beds were comfy.

Negative: The oven needs cleaning, we cooked one thing and could still smell a burning oil type smell the morning after. The house is split over three floors, with the biggest bathroom being on the bottom floor, so to shower in the morning you have to go down two floors and back up two to your bedroom. The house was cold, with the downstairs bathroom being extremely cold. I understand there’s no gas heating and it was December but something to bear in mind. Also, just a note on the customer service, there was a severe snow storm and no communication from cottages.com despite the advice not to travel so we did manage to leave in the morning because we were worried but a 15 minute journey to the main road took 2 hours.

Positive: A cosy cottage on three levels. The sitting room was comfortable with a log burning stove. All facilities for self-catering were available. The property appeared clean and tidy. A modern bathroom and kitchen. The cottage was well placed for Windermere and Ambleside

Negative: On the day of my departure, all towels & bed linen were stripped and placed in a plastic bag for the cleaners as requested by the owners. On removing the fitted sheet from the bed it revealed a really badly soiled/stained "mattress protector" cover, that I can only assume were body fluids

Summary: A lovely cottage tainted by a lack of attention to some basic hygiene
