Our 'Little Big Sur' is an off-the-grid, in the jungle, palapa with many modern conveniences for those travelers who want an ecological, private and natural vacation. This palapa is in the eco-preserve, Los Chonchos, located one hour south of Boca de Tamatlan. Boca is about 45 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta. Chonchos is accessible only by water taxi. The palapa and immediate area are exceptionally beautiful and private, but not for everyone. This is for active people who want to literally be “in nature.'
ACCOMMODATIONS: 'Little Big Sur' (LBS) is on a jungle cliff directly overlooking the Bay of Banderas. It is about 1200 square feet, which is open to the bay/jungle, except for the master bedroom and bathroom. LBS has a full kitchen including solar powered refrigerator, stove, oven and all the plates/utensils/pots needed. There is a covered living room/dining room and outdoor deck overlooking the Bay. VIEWS ARE STUNNING FROM ANYWHERE IN THE PALAPA.
Sleeping arrangements include the master bedroom (queen), an upstairs loft bedroom (queen) and an outdoors bed (king) on the deck overlooking the Bay. On additional person could sleep on the large couch. All bedding is included.
HOW TO GET THERE: A typical visit to Little Big Sur includes flying into Puerto Vallarta, staying the night while shopping for provisions like food and drink, and catching the 9:00 AM morning water taxi to Chonchos. About an hour later you’ll arrive at the Chonchos beach and will be greeted by the staff. Sometimes – depending on how many people and how much luggage you bring – you’ll be helped up to LBS by mule.
WHAT TO DO : There is plenty to do – including doing nothing. During the migration season, its not uncommon to see 50 whales glide right beneath the deck. Walk down to either of two beaches for snorkeling, fishing or just plain sunbathing. Kayaks and swimming equipment are available. There are plenty of trails through the jungle. The nearest village, Chimo, is a two-mile hike along the beach and mountains. Sometimes the best thing is to just chill by reading a book and taking in the spectacular mountain jungle and ocean, which surrounds the palapa.
LBS is a also a great place for a family and friends vacation. There is enough room to sleep 6 pretty comfortably, 8 including coaches. There are also other palapas nearby that can be rented for overflow.
For those who must, the LBS has electricity, some cell phones work, and there is Internet in the centrally located restaurant.
A LA CARTE PRICES: An LBS stay is $125/night for 2 people, $25 for each additional person, with a three night minimum. This includes the full palapa that can sleep 6 comfortably. It does not include: travel to/from the airport and Boca de Tomatlan, your food/beverages, the cost of the water taxi ride ($15/each way per person), and the cost of a hotel for an overnight stay in Puerto Vallarta.
COMBINATION PACKAGE PRICES: The weekly Combination Package described above includes two nights in Corona Adobe's Adobe Suite - in the El Centro district of Puerto Vallarta. The Corona Adobe has a pool, beautiful 360 degree views of Puerto Vallarta, and all the modern conveniences nestled inside a 100 year old Adobe. Summary: Our second time to Chonchos and had an even better time than the first! It's definitely some work to get out there but it is more than worth it. This particular place had the most epic view and the deck bed was amazing!

Summary: Little Big Sur palapa was all it was advertised. It provided an awesome getaway for my wife and I to decompress after the past two years (death of our fathers and the COVID pandemic - we are school teachers/administrators). We were able to be off grid with limited communication. Kitchen was great, and views were fantastic. Easy walk to beaches. For those that truly want to getaway, this a is a location for that. Summary: This is our third time to come to Chonchos! We really enjoyed our stay at Little Big Sur. The master bed was so comfortable and we loved being able to see the ocean from our bed. Being able to close the double doors to make the bedroom private would be nice if you were there with others and wanted some privacy. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking and eating utensils. The deck was large and we really liked having an umbrella on the deck because that allowed us to spend a lot of time there in the sun if we chose, but also in the shade as well. The lights throughout the house gave off plenty of light in the evenings and there were plenty of outlets to charge our phones. The walk to Chimo is beautiful and Arturo's restaurant serves excellent food. We also bought a fish fillet from him that we could prepare at our palapa. Josephat is so friendly and ready to help with anything you need!

Summary: Los Chonchos is a special place and not for everybody. Getting there is surely an adventure!! (ours involved 1.5 hours by boat, a canoe, and an hour long coastal hike in semi-darkness- it gets easier once you do it a few times!). Having read other reviews, we kind of knew what we were getting ourselves into but one must also plan for the unexpected, which in our case was having to land at the next village, El Chimo, further down the coast (due to a bad storm last September, the beach at Los Chonchos is not accessible by water taxi, locals told us they haven't landed there in months), loading our week's worth of groceries and our luggage onto a mule and then hiking the trail back to Los Chonchos as the sun was setting). We shared this adventure with 2 other couples and thankfully we had brought headlamps (highly recommended). Once we found our palapa and were settled in, we began to relax and take in the surroundings. Our week there was spent reading, sunbathing, eating, napping and whale watching. It surely allows for reflection and relaxation. The locals and those who take care of the area are very friendly and helpful. Definitely advisable to bring cash as you will need it to pay for the water taxi (250MX pp each way), the mules to carry your things (500MX each way)+tips (once you see how hard the guys and mules work you will surely want to tip them). Also, if you wish to order any basic items, fresh fish, or beer from the nearby village, you can text Antonio who owns the local restaurant there and he will send over with the guys and mules. Of course you can hike there yourself for lunch. It's very much like camping since you're completely outdoors in an open space but with some modern conveniences of a kitchen, warm shower and wifi (sometimes). There are lots of insects and you may also be visited by the local cows and dogs! Thankfully there is a mosquito net over the main bed. This place worked well for just the two of us. Perhaps one more couple could work-as long as they are ok with the porch bed (gets wet when rains) or upstairs loft (no mosquito net). It's rustic! I fully enjoyed our time there and I would recommend to those looking for a unique vacation opportunity away from other people and tourists.

Summary: Little Big Sur in Los Chonchos is an amazing getaway if you truly want to unwind and disconnect (though the internet was faster than anywhere else we were in MX)! The place was beautifully kept up, and the hosts were very responsive. The boat ride there is stunning, and feels like a little adventure. This truly is an open palapa in the jungle, and the nature surrounding it is beautiful. I would absolutely recommend staying here if you are craving a break from city life!

Summary: We loved Chonchos and LBS! The location is spectacular, and the palapa is beautiful. The rustic nature of the place allows for a peaceful and restful experience without the need for the usual “noise” of everyday life. Watching frigate birds , pelicans, and dolphins, beautiful sunsets and stars is all the entertainment anyone could ask for.
