Positive: The staff were absolutely lovely, greeted at the bus from town. Check in process was smooth and comfortable. Room was stunning. Food was amazing and dining room was clean. Staff went above and beyond when they found our lost IC card and graciously sent it to our next hotel. Fantastic Ryokan experience.

Positive: Beautiful location and building and the traditional ryokan trappings felt sincere and authentic. Staff were wonderful - kind, polite and incredibly accommodating - my partner cannot eat gluten and though we emailed before and they didn’t commit to adapting the menu, when we arrived and explained her dietary requirements, they adapted both dinner and breakfast without sacrificing anything. Onsen was lovely too.

Negative: It is a little bit out of the way which is a struggle in and out without suitcases but bus in morning gets you into town. Traditional bedding not the most comfortable but that was our choice to book and experience.

Summary: Wonderful experience with kind and generous staff.

Positive: Staying here felt like stepping back in time—at least 200 years! From the moment you step off the bus, the attentive staff pampers you, setting the tone for an unforgettable experience. The beauty of the property is astounding, both in the common areas and the rooms. The meal served was exceptional, and the onsen experience was absolutely unforgettable (I was fortunate enough to have it all to myself at 10 PM). Stopping here before heading into the bustling, overwhelming energy of Tokyo was the best decision ever!

Negative: Some additional charges were unclear when I booked, and I was a bit puzzled when presented with the extra bill at the end of my stay. I’d recommend paying close attention when reserving your room to avoid any surprises. :)

Positive: We had a great time at the Motoyu Ishiya. Beautiful onsen and the staff was super kind! Despite we’ve been told there was no vegetarian option, they managed to serve us a no-meat dinner.
