Positive: Wow. Bit off the wall and you will either love it or hate it. We loved it. Up a mountain track with tight (very tight) hairpins. The place is like a religious retreat with huge history, botanical gardens, a view point to die for, a library, observatory and god knows what else all tended by a couple, a few staff and two nuns (and the cat) Food is rustic, tasty and very Italian. Beers on tap and it’s all very easy going with a great fun host. Rooms are big enough and clean.

Negative: Not much we didn’t like. The huge bells next door going off at 10.00pm and again at 7.00am nearly gave me a heart attack but it was character building. Breakfast is basic but works and they will cook you basic bacon and eggs if you want as long as you don’t mind a rural approach to presentation.

Summary: Wouldn’t have missed it for the world but make sure you know what you’re going to

Positive: We liked everything here. In particular the location and the staff. We found a note on the door explaining that it would open at 6 pm, and it did. The evening meal was fabulous with generous portions, all for a reasonable price.
