Positive: A wonderful ryokan experience! Great staff! Great service! Big rooms - even the “small” room was quite big! Good restaurant!

Negative: The small room was a bit on the “requires renewal” side.

Positive: The room was beautiful and clean. The private bath with a view of the garden was incredible. The staff were lovely and helpful, and eager to please

Negative: The futon bed was a little bit uncomfortable for me personally and I woke up with a sore neck and back. But that is the only fault I had and it is not the fault of the staff

Positive: Amazing experience including private onsen and your own kimono for walking around the hotel. Japanese breakfast, ice cream, coffee and massage chairs - perfect place to grab that extra Japanese vibes.

Negative: As much as it was an experience, sleeping on futon is really not comfortable.

Positive: We had an amazing experience at Ryokan Nanzenji Kyoto and will definitely be back! The private room onsen was so relaxing with fresh mountain spring water offering ultimate relaxation at the end of the day. Staff were lovely, very accommodating and service was very fast and friendly. The restaurant food is simply splendid, an experience not to be missed. Thank you for making our stay memorable

Positive: Loved the room and view. Didn't really care of floor sleeping every night - but I realize that this was on the website. Felt like the staff was a bit short. Could have had faster service on making rooms up and cleaning up glasses around the coffee maker - several times dirty cups were there.

Negative: Hallway carpets worn out or needing a deep cleaning. A couple of areas in the lobby were sort of blocked off with furniture - it looked very haphazard and scattered. We got in room massages setup. The concierge was very gracious about this but he didn't tell us that the workers didn't work for the hotel and expected cash - which we didn't have. The hotel staff graciously loaned us cash until we could go the the store but it was awkward, and the ladies that did the service spoke absolutely no English, so it was also awkward. AC in room never really got the room cool enough and with record temps while we were there this was not good either. The landscaping outside needed a lot of work; lots of dead leaves and branches - just general upkeep missing. Lastly, we got the room with the tub in it. Generally it was very nice, but it was set extremely hot - like over 106 degrees F (41 C); which I know because I have a hot tub at home. It was dangerously hot on two different occasions, and had several warnings about not draining it - which we had to do to reduce the temp. We stayed in this room three nights, and with one dinner and a couple of glasses of wine, the bill came to $1000 per night. The place is traditional and nice but it is not a $1000 per night stay.

Summary: Overall - nice place and WONDERFUL staff but it needs some updates, arranging, and cleaning.
