Makapala Cottage | Keokea Beach Sweet Retreat

2 Bedroom Cottage in Makapala, Kapaau

This magical 2 bedroom cottage is on the road to Keokea Beach Park in North Kohala. This is a peaceful retreat in a special old Hawaii neighborhood. Surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and perched above a gulch with seasonal stream, the cedar home features luxurious woods throughout the interior. Cabinets of African mahogany, koa, maple and red gum eucalyptus make the kitchen an artistic delight. Eight different woods pattern the floors. Cathedral ceilings give plenty of light and a feeling of spaciousness.
The large surrounding deck invites you to live outside, enjoying views of Maui and a peek of the ocean below. The landscape gives a sense of seclusion, yet only a short drive from the charming towns of Kapaau and Hawi. Keokea Beach Park is walking distance from the cottage. Local families enjoy picnics and watching for whales in season there! Or drive /run 2 miles to Polulu Valley and hike down to the black sand beach. Rich soil, just enough rain, and wind-protected gulches made this area the breadbasket of the ancient Hawaiians. They say that the property was home to King Kamehameha's private Taro patch!
The master bedroom has a king bed; the 2nd bedroom has a double bed. The bathroom is between the two bedrooms. The cedar hale is a separate building next door, where we stay if you need anything or if you need complete privacy too. Often we are traveling, so you'll have the place to yourselves. Outdoor shower near laundry. Wake up and pick your breakfast right off the tree- papaya, mango, bananas, mac nuts, lemons, Tahitian limes, collard greens often grow right on the property. Enjoy quiet nights and the Milky way with local hiking and fantastic beaches a walk away!

Summary: If you are looking for some peace and quiet, this is the place for you. It truly is a retreat. Susan has anticipated every need her guests may have and stocked the house accordingly with towels, linens, kitchen supplies and beach supplies. We enjoyed the visiting lizards and birds and the starry nights. If you don't mind being a little out of the way, this is the perfect place to stay in Hawaii!

Summary: This was such a beautiful property. Everyone in our group thought this was a very special place to stay on Hawaii, not like your typical condo! The surrounding forest is full of life and is such a relaxing place to wake up to each day.

Summary: Susan's place was clean and sweet, with a lovely deck overlooking jungle-like garden & fruit trees. We loved the neighborhood feel and the walk down to beautiful (but not really swimmable) Keokea beach. Kitchen was well-stocked and nicely set up. Susan gave our kids a fabulous tour of her garden and they came back with fruit and herbs. We definitely will be back!

Summary: My husband and I and another couple stayed here for three nights. It was magical, just like previous reviews noted. The house was much nicer than the pictures. The kitchen was abundantly stocked for cooking. We spent most of our time on the large beautiful deck overlooking the jungle, listening to the birds during the day and the frogs at night. The house is just 2miles up the road from Pololu Valley (beautiful), where you can hike down to a black sand beach. Susan brought over a basket of oranges and avocado from the neighbors trees....a nice treat. Thank you Susan. We loved the experience of staying in your jungle house.

Summary: This was the first time we stayed outside of Kona while visiting the Big Island. We may never stay in Kona again after this extremely relaxing visit at Susan's place. We walked to the beach every day, and prepared all our meals so it was really a different experience for us, and one we thoroughly enjoyed. Susan was wonderful about responding to questions before our trip, and was a true pleasure to meet in person. Avocado's were in season, and in great abundance on the property. We have found it difficult to go back to the 'ol Haas avocado's here in California. The best part of the location in Kapaau was being away from the very touristy Kona, and just enjoying this beautiful part of the island. We survived the heat/humidity just fine after the first day/nite. Thank you Susan, and Peter for everything!

Summary: The house is beautiful and well equipped. The lanai is spacious and cool. It is in the jungle! Lots of birds in the morning and frogs at night. Peaceful, tranquil, away from the crowds. But Kapaau and Hawi have everything you need!

Summary: Thank You Susan! This place was exactly what we needed ~ and having 5 weeks to spend here was, well, paradise! Our favorite places to hang out were the comfortably and tastefully furnished lanai ~ every morning (even the cold, windy, rainy mornings) found us at the table with breakfast and then ukulele and guitar practice (I put new strings on the guitar which I was so happy to find), and weather permitting a walk to Keokea Beach Park where we would sit on the perfect flat rock and watch the waves roll in ~ a soothing meditation. The Sweet Retreat had everything we needed for all the comforts of home ~ cooking utensils, pots and pans, the outdoor grill, the most comfortable beds, a great shower, and we loved the fridge with its ice maker! We cooked and had lovely dinners outside and on clear nights the stars!! I loved the night sounds and bird calls in the morning and I did get used to the mewing for breakfast in the morning from the sweet kitties (by the end of our stay even Betty the Calico let me pet her). We loved being so close to Pololu Valley and went up on several occasions to watch the sunrise ~ really magical! The grocery store Takata's had everything we needed and the Saturday Farmers' Market had some some the best sweet treats ever! And Travis the Gardener cut us a couple of coconuts which I opened and drank ~ so, so good! We spent quite a bit of time at Kapaa and Mahukona parks watching whales ~ also so magical and precious ~ and we loved the little beach just south of Spencer Beach Park, as well as all the historical sites. No matter where we went during the day the Sweet Retreat was perfect place to come "home" to. Truly a home away from home! We hope to be back in the late fall when the whales return. Mahalo Susan for always responding to questions/concerns. I hope I have the opportunity to meet you some day ~ ~ ~ A hui hou! Peace and Aloha Susan and John, Olympia WA

Summary: The Sweet Retreat is everything its name says - such a warm and wonderful home and lanai sprinkled with little art treasures here and there. Little bits of magic. My favorite part was relaxing on the porch and listening - just listening to the tropical songs of the frogs and crickets and birds - a symphony that let me take a big breath and just be. The geckos greeted us on the porch in the mornings defying all gravity and scurrying upside down in their luminescent colors. What a treat - so much fun to watch over coffee and English Muffins. Susan is joy and so easy to connect and communicate with. You couldn't ask for a lovelier or more attentive host! The Sweet Retreat is in a perfect location - near the best hike anywhere (Pololu Valley). If you can, definitely do the hike - it's short and steep - worth every step. The black sand beach is the most obvious reason people take the trail, but turn around from the beach and explore the verdant fern glen also. It is one of the most magical places I've ever been. The small towns including Hawi nearby are charming - some really great food and fun galleries. We splurged and took a helicopter ride from Hilo over the volcanos and recent lava flows - a unforgettable experience. It was definitely worth it if you can possibly swing it. Be sure to walk out on a lava field - it is a remarkable sensation to walk and walk on a field of black lava that goes on as far as you can see. You can pull off between the Kona airport and the Sweet Retreat - closer to the airport. We also loved the snorkeling. By far the best for us was at Beach 69. It's hard to find - ask people. It is a remarkable beach with wonderful tide pools and colorful fish. I saw many schools of fish - in addition to some swimming here and there. Very powerful. The beach itself though is unique in that is has many trees and you can relax under some shade virtually anywhere. It is beautiful. The Sweet Retreat will forever stay with us! You couldn't ask for a more wonderful and inviting place to stay with much to do - and not do - whatever your needs.

Summary: If you're looking to relax in a comfortable cottage in a beautiful setting - this is it! Spacious with all the facilities you would need, comfortable beds, huge lanai with stupendous view of the Hawaiian jungle, and near to several towns with all services. This is an ideal spot to spend a vacation and great value besides. There were several days we just never left the property, but if you want a restaurant, farmer's market, coffee shop, or boutique shopping, all of it can be found in Kapa'au or Hawi which are both just minutes away. Or you can drive up the hill to the larger town of Waimea, which is in a completely different climate on a vast grassland with Mauna Kea in the background, in less than half an hour. It's about an hour drive south to Kona, but in between there are all kinds of resort hotels, shopping malls, lava flows, beaches, tours, or just about anything else. Susan, the property owner, and her colleague Peter were wonderfully helpful and just very nice people. We can't say enough good things about the whole experience. Loved the company of all the little geckos as well. Tim & Tena Anahim Lake, BC Canada

Summary: This was the perfect property to catch your breath and check out for awhile. Sitting on the Lanai and looking over the Tree tops and down to the beautiful gardens was just what I needed. I'll definitely return.
