Positive: LOCATION. When I looked at the satellite map of the Merzouga desert, I was shocked to see that so many camps were very close to each other on the eastern side of Erg Chebbi-one of Morocco’s largest seas of sand dunes. But there was an area to the south of the erg where there were less than 10 camps, all spread out in a large area. Itran was one of those camps. Another important factor to note was that Itran was surrounded by impressive sand dunes, high enough for us to go sandboarding on. Other camps are located far from the dunes, so the guests would have to be transported by camels or 4x4 vehicles to the dunes. At Itran, the sand dunes were a few steps from our tent; we just walked out and the magnificent sunrises and sunsets were right there. THE TENTS. All tents in so-called “luxury camps” have a toilet and shower area, so that was not an issue. But what I really wanted was a tent with windows—large windows! Almost all of the camps have tents with only a door, and possibly a small window, but only a handful have panoramic windows. Imagine the last thing you see before you fall asleep are the stars in the sky!

Negative: Nothing. This was the desert stay that I had dreamt of for so many years! Absolutely wonderful!

Negative: The staff did not go out of their way to make it pleasant. We had to ask to start the bivouac and there was no signing around the fire. A little disappointing. This is off season and the staff seemed disinterested. The food was not good.

Positive: Amazing experience right in front of the sand dunes in the most comfortable conditions we could hope for . Having windows on the tents really made a difference in winter so we could enjoy the views while being warm at night . Heating worked great even though it was really cold at night . This was glamping as we imagined it. Staff was fantastic . Special thanks to Aziz for being so attentive to our needs and for the great conversations.
