Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: Our family group of 15 had a lovely stay in Apley Hall. The photographs were a pretty accurate representation of the lovely spacious building. We felt the owner had done a good job of maintaining the character of the building but had provided facilities needed such as modern functional bathrooms. The gardens were beautiful and the location near Bridgnorth and Ironbridge was great.

Negative: The main problem was the inadequate dining facilities and we discovered very late, that the dining table provided only seats 6 which we felt was grossly inadequate for a venue boasting it accommodates 23. The Finest Retreats website states the use of the banquet room is by prior arrangement but it omits the hidden charge of £500 which we felt was excessive and for which we had not budgeted for. We had no choice but to pay for this as eating together was a petty basic requirement for us. Unfortunately we then discovered we didn’t get the posh banquet room seen in photographs on the website but were provided with multiple trestle tables and plastic folding chairs which were very uncomfortable. The one functioning kitchen that was provided also let the property down.Although it had a good size fridge and freezer it had only one hob and oven, a small microwave and air fryer and a mish mash old crockery, cutlery and pans. The space was inadequate to cater for the 15 of us and we only managed as we had brought some food already cooked in large pans. There is a coffee maker provided with some pods but once these run out unless you can source more you need to bring it own cafetière as we did. We did have access to the second modern kitchen which had a functioning sink and additional work surface but the cooker and electric points are out of action. Finally the cot provided had a mattress that didn’t fit well so the parents of the baby used their own travel cot.
