Romantic History: The Château de Launay is also the home of a romantic story that involved the Seigneur de Luce, Charles de Coesmes and Gabrielle d'Harcourt. Their marriage in 1523 was initially disapproved by François 1er following the abduction of Gabrielle by Charles de Coesmes, who was aided by Pierre de Bernay, Seigneur de Launay.
The couple took refuge at Château de Launay and subsequent events are known in great detail including quotes from the angry mother trying to fetch her daughter at night.
But by 1527, because of services rendered by the seigneur and some say because of Gabrielle's remarkable beauty, the couple often joined the court of François 1er at Amboise and Chambord.
Later the chatellenie de Luce was changed into a barony.

Summary: Firstly the castle is spectacular on approach and even more magical when filled with family and friends. The location is private but close enough to a few shops and towns. We had wonderful days by the pool and fun evenings dining at the long outside dining table overlooking the garden and lake, lit by lanterns. Annette the housekeeper was amazing, popping in daily and serving fresh croissants and coffee every morning. The pool is lovely, good size and heated. Bedrooms were very comfortable and nicely decorated, mostly with views of the lake. We were sad to depart and would definitely return. Magnifique!

Summary: We recently booked this fairytale chateau with 12 friends, to help celebrate my 50th Birthday. It could not have been a more special place! From the grand entrance with the stately turrets and the moat, complete with its own black swan, the chateau completely blow us away. We arranged a dinner party at the chateau for my birthday night, using a locally recommended chef and had an amazing feast in the sumptuous dining room. A huge thank you to Jean- Marie and his team. Not forgetting the housekeeper Annette, who was the icing on the cake, for our stay. She had a delicious and well needed breakfast ready for us every morning and kept all the fires roaring. A huge thank you from all of us. We had the most magical few days and all wished we could have stayed longer. We will definitely be back!

Summary: We can't say enough about how perfect this place was for our group. We had 9 people with 2 couples so used 7 of the rooms and all of the rooms were fantastic. The chateau could very easily and very comfortably accommodate a bigger group since several rooms have multiple beds. We looked at the carriage house which can be included by request and it was very charming and nice and even has a small kitchenette-- We had 3 people from the states, 2 from Scotland, and 4 from Paris and every one of them absolutely loved the place. Wonderful chateau and rooms: comfortable with charming touches & beautiful grounds, and great location. Annette was absolutely wonderful and it was great to have her lovely petit dejeuner waiting for us every morning. She was completely unobtrusive but also extremely helpful--and also patient with some of our tortured French ;-) We all love to cook so ended up eating out during the day on our outings and then cooking at night: the kitchen and dining room are well-stocked and a great layout for group cooking and eating. There are just so many nice touches to the place--the well-stocked linens and bathrobes, the two big fireplaces with bountiful wood and kindling, and the 10+ bicycles in great condition and ready to ride. And of course we loved the gorgeous black swan that surprised us every morning in a different spot in the waterway that surrounds the chateau: absolutely magical! Marie-Laure was extremely responsive and helpful and made the entire process easy and welcoming. We'd highly recommend this place for any kind of group get together or reunion and hope to be back again one day!

Summary: We met up with three other families here for a week in July and it was really awesome. Lots of space for the nine kids (3-11) to explore - the neighbours ponies and donkeys were a daily hit as was the pool, the chess turret and cycling around the grounds. The house itself is large enough to give everyone space but small enough to feel like home away from home. Not much to do in immediate locale, but we weren’t looking for lots of day trips. Quality time together and the ability to let the kids run a little wild was all we needed and the chateau did not disappoint. The biggest luxury was probably Annette the housekeeper who set out breakfast every day and did general household chores (very unobtrusively) - she was also v useful for info about local area. We had local chef cook for us one night which was also a real treat. We’d love to meet up at Launay again!

Summary: My family and I stayed here over Easter, what a wonderful, peaceful haven Chateau Launay is - fantastic for a big family occasion or a large party of guests. This charming chateau has been sympathetically restored to it's former 16th century grandeur whilst still keeping a warm and relaxing atmosphere. Annette the lovely housekeeper was there to welcome us, and at our request because we had a long journey on our arrival she made us a typical French meal - so welcome after many hours on the road. Her breakfasts each morning of fresh coffee, breads and croissants was wonderful. Her presence during the day was very discreet as she moved quietly around the house making up the rooms and keeping it tidy. Having lived in the area her whole life her knowledge came in very handy with directions to local towns and markets etc. The chateau grounds are immaculate with plenty of places to explore, the older children in our party had great fun on a torchlit night time walkabout. We made use of the bikes, the table tennis and also the barbeque. This was not my first visit to Launay I have been several times before and there is no better testament than a guest who returns time after time. Can't wait for my next visit!

Summary: Our family reunited and gathered around a beautiful Christmas tree and warm fireplaces! We enjoyed the walks in the park and around the property observing the wildlife and many kinds of birds. We loved spending time together in the splendid common rooms and yet enjoyed the privacy of our beautiful and comfortable bedrooms all equipped with a new and elegant bathroom. We plan to come back to the chateau this year or next and this time explore out a little more which may be difficult as we loved being there so much! Isabelle M.
