2 Bedroom Cottage in Brecon

Pretty pet-friendly Bwthyn Gwennol, near Brecon, is a 'best of both worlds' bolthole offering a cosy yet contemporary, wild yet WiFi, close to a pub yet peaceful getaway on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in the Epynt hills.
Recently refurbished stone-built cottage offering a characterful rustic-modern mix of decor, a well-equipped home from home with walks from the door, a country pub a stone's throw away that is perfectly placed to explore the Brecon Beacons & beyond.
The perfect getaway - Bwthyn Gwennol (translated from Welsh into "Swallow Cottage" after the swallows that nest in the area every summer) is a recently refurbished two-bedroom cottage in the peaceful hamlet of Pentrebach on the edge of the Brecon Beacons just off of a country lane 3 miles north of the A40. The cottage was rebuilt from an original byre in 2005 and the stone and timbers were re-used in the rebuilding. The cottage has been recently refurbished and redecorated.
Sleeping four it is a cosy and comfortable cottage, mixing contemporary with classic styles with many character features including oak beams, stone floors, hand-made oak kitchen all topped off with a tastefully coordinated Farrow & Ball and Little Greene painted colour scheme. All rooms are fully furnished with a mix of vintage and contemporary furniture, including sumptuous Tetrad sofas, and dotted throughout are artwork and ornaments some from local artists and some from the owners’ own giftware range to make you feel at home. Underfloor heating throughout and a wood burning stove in the lounge ensure it is cosy in winter and the stone walls and limestone & travertine flooring mean it stays cool in the summer months.
To ‘show’ you around…
The front-door approached along a private dry-stone-walled pathway has a key-lock-safe (details sent prior to arrival) if we are not around to welcome you.
The enclosed outer porch is perfect for storing coats, shoes, boots and pet paraphernalia – it is heated so great for airing outdoor clothes as well as drying off damp dogs!
The kitchen is fully equipped for all your wining and dining needs with a range of equipment for snacking & nibbles through to cooking a roast & baking a cake! All the expected appliances; kettle, toaster, microwave, coffee-machine etc are available along with electric oven & halogen hob, fridge, freezer and dishwasher. A welcome pack with a few essentials to get you started will be found on the kitchen table along with the ‘Bwthyn Book’ which covers all the information, from essential to trivial, you may need during your stay.
The lounge-diner has a dining table to seat four (NB there is a high-chair available for little people – along with toddler-friendly crockery, cups etc) with French doors opening out into the terrace. The lounge has 2 comfy Tetrad sofas with throws, flat-screen TV, free-view SKY box and DVD player. There is a broad selection of DVDs, along with board games and plenty of books suitable for all. The log-burner is easy to use, with a supply of logs in the cooler months – and we can help you get started lighting it if necessary…
Just off this is a utility room and downstairs loo, with a washer-dryer, an airer, iron and ironing board. There is also an outdoor clothes airer.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms, both with king-size beds made up with crisp white cotton bedding and throws. There is ample storage for clothes and personal effects and each bedroom has an alarm clock and hairdryer. There is also a travel cot and changing mat available along with some traditional toys to entertain little ones.
The main bathroom comprises of bath with shower over and is of a generous size to ensure a relaxing soak after a day’s walking, sight-seeing…
Outside there is a private parking area for 2 cars. There is a fully enclosed garden for children and/or pets with a lawn gently sloping down to a terrace with patio furniture and BBQ. There is a further area beyond the drive with picnic bench and fruit trees.
We try to be as ‘green’ as we can regarding our cleaning products using Ecover and Method and local company Myddfai’s environmentally friendly hand-wash and lotion.
There is unlimited WiFi throughout the cottage and plenty of spaces to set up a lap-top if you absolutely have to!
Pentrebach is in sheep-farming country, so is a working wilderness. There are wonderful walks from the door taking you up into the hills with breathtaking views across to the Brecon Beacons and the 40 mile circular Epynt Way walking, horse-riding and cycle trail is at the top of the valley.
The village is lucky to have retained its local pub - the Shoemakers Arms - in fact the villagers co-own it to ensure its perpetuity! As a traditional community the village has numerous events throughout the year, for example; Sports Day (August Bank Holiday), Bonfire Night, New Year’s Eve party to which guests are more the welcome to attend! The pub has a reputation for good, hearty food, at a reasonable price. Please check website for opening times, as they do vary - especially during the winter, and it’s always best to book a table on the weekends as it does get busy.
NB As there are livestock in the fields surrounding the property please ensure dogs are on a lead/under control at all times.
Sennybridge (3 miles away) is the nearest place for provisions and has several garages with well-stocked grocery stores attached, a post office and a handful of pubs.
Heading east…
Brecon is the closest town with a mixture of a few chains and independent shops, lots of cafes, pubs and restaurants, a leisure centre, cinema, theatre, cathedral, as well as several museums plus canal and river walks. ‘Brecon Jazz’ is a highlight of the annual calendar taking place in August.
Slightly further afield there is Hay-on-Wye – the world-famous book town with dozens of book shops, independent stores and plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants and of course the famous Hay Festival which takes place in May every year.
Further east, but well within striking distance, are the towns of Crickhowell, lots of boutique shops, cafes, bars & castle and Abergavenny, the ‘gate-way to the Beacons’ with its fabulous food festival every September.
Go west…
Llandovery is a typical west Wales market town with lots of independent shops and eateries as well as the ruins of Llandovery castle with the striking statue of Llywelyn standing guard.
A little further on is the popular market town of Llandeilo with lots more independent stores including a Ginhaus and branch of Toast!
And, of course, Cardiff and Swansea are both under an hour away if you need a city fix!
There is ample walking in every direction; the popular peaks in the eastern Beacons around the Pen y Fan range and further to the Black Mountains, the quieter western Beacons and Carmarthen Fans, the Swansea valley cave & waterfall country to the south and to the north the wilds of the Epynt Way into mid-Wales and beyond.
The area is great for other activities too; bird-watching (see Red Kites circling overhead from the garden – the record we’ve seen is 19 in the sky all at the same time!), fishing (famous fishing rivers the Usk, Towy and Wye are all within 40 minutes drive – the river Usk is only 3 miles away), cycling (bike hire available in Brecon), pony trekking, kayaking, climbing, sailing and golf (Cradoc golf club is only 8 miles away) are all within the local area.
And if all of the above doesn't wear you out during the day, at night why not try a little star-gazing ? The Brecon Beacons National Park became an International Dark Sky Reserve in 2012 and there are some great spots we can recommend on a clear, starry, starry night to wish upon a star or two trillion...

Summary: The cottage is extremely well equipped with all the home from home comforts. There are plenty of blankets and extra duvets should these be necessary and the kitchen has everything you could possibly need, including a coffee maker. The bathroom is beautifully appointed with a powerful shower and an endless supply of hot water. We were so pleased with the cleanliness on our arrival and found the cottage to be warm and cosy with underfloor heating and the option of a wood burner. Arrival instructions were very detailed and easy to follow. Our dog thoroughly enjoyed the enclosed garden and the walks we could follow from the door. We had an evening meal at the pub, just a few doors down the road which we would recommend wholeheartedly. We loved the peace and quiet of the hamlet in which the cottage is situated. Communication with the host, Jenny was superb - thank you Jenny for having us to stay!

Summary: Everything lived up to expectations based on listing’s description and other people’s reviews, can’t really add anything else. If you want a well equipped middle of nowhere location with fantastic walks and a brilliant pub on your doorstep, this is your place😊

Summary: The cottage is fantastic. Really well equipped, warm, comfortable and in a great location

Summary: This is a very easy cottage to feel at home in; it's practical, tastefully decorated (with masses of attention to detail), comfortable, and Jenny is extremely quick to answer any queries you might have. From being left a small "welcome pack" of food items to finding tea, coffee pods, oil, spices, dog treats and more kitchen utensils than you might have at home at your disposal, it's clear that the hosts aren't cutting corners here. We also realised on the night before we left that we could log in to Netflix via the DVD player! The off-street parking was useful, and the fully enclosed garden was perfect to allow our greyhound to wander around without us worrying she'd be bothering the nearby sheep and chickens. Jenny clearly has high standards and this is reflected in how the cottage is maintained and stocked for guests. We would highly recommend Bwthyn Gwennol as a comfortable home from home.

Summary: Just returned from a long weekend away, the cottage is furnished and decorated to a very high standard with so many little extras and lovely touches. really peaceful location with a cracking little local pub, I would strongly advise guests to book for food as they get really busy and there is only one dog friendly table inside. Thoroughly enjoyed our break and would highly recommend xx

Summary: We booked a 4 night stay here over October half term and honestly had the BEST experience. Jenny is lovely and was super helpful with hints and tips on what to do before we arrived and the cottage and setting are just out of this world. Everything has been lovingly done to the highest of standards and the location is wonderful for accessing all that the Brecon Beacons have to offer. I would recommend a stay here to anyone.

Summary: We stayed at Bwthyn Gwennol for five nights and felt right at home. It’s a beautiful cottage with many lovely details. And it’s exactly like it is described. The kitchen is very well equipped and we were greeted by a lovely Welcome-package. Communication with Jenny was easy and she really cared for all we needed. And even all the neighbours and the pub are lovely. We were very sad to leave.

Summary: Stunning high quality homely cottage in a quiet Welsh village. Excellent base for walking in the Brecon Beacons. Appreciated the welcome pack. Local pub (Shoemakers Arms) provided excellent vegetarian food, great service and lovely atmosphere. A real home from home experience. Highly recommended.

Summary: We had some poor weather during our stay and appreciated the comfort and luxury of this lovely cottage. It’s the perfect place to rest and relax. The owners have put a huge amount of thought into the needs of their guests and I don’t think we have ever stayed in such a well equipped holiday rental. We enjoyed eating at the Shoemakers each night, proper traditional pub grub just on the doorstep. There were beautiful walks from our doorstep for our 2 dogs, miles of green lanes. The locals were very friendly and welcoming. Thank you, you have a lovely cottage.

Summary: Very easy process, property listing was accurate and a bonus that the pub was in walking distance with good beer & great pub grub
