Summary: There are not a lot of options in Olwein, Iowa. The Cornerstone is a adequate place to stay. The hotel is clean but very old and dated. It's in need for a refresh. I was there in August. I had 3 rooms and they constantly smelled damp and musty. Keeping the AC on lower degrees did not help. I'm not sure what was driving this but we could not get the smell or humidity levels in the room to acceptable levels. I do believe the musty smell was caused the the warmer temperatures and not due to a cleanliness issue. The staff worked to keep the place clean but there's only so much you can do to an old hotel. Additionally, one item that I really did not like was that they made a copy of your ID when checking in. In these times of identity theft, maintaining copies of drivers licenses is not a good practice. The place is 100% paper copies so I am concerned about their security of private information. Ownership of the hotel should not want this liability.
