Positive: The hotel is beautiful. The room and complex was very clean. The staff were very friendly, and the food in the restaurant was excellent.
Negative: The hotel is situated on the wrong side of the very busy road. So, to get to the tourist area and beach, there's a 15 minute walk crossing a busy road.

Positive: Faded grandeur. Very large rooms and a decent breakfast. Staff were friendly once engaged. Several swimming pools.
Negative: For a '5 Star' place, a few small things let it down. Some of the lightbulbs not working in the room, shower drain not draining properly (leading to risk of a small flood in bathroom!). Hotel is close to the highway, so some road noise (expected), and dust on outdoor terrace seating cushions (not expected). Not many guests staying, so the staff generally looked a little bored (not their fault I guess).
Summary: Faded Grandeur. Spacious but not the claimed 5* level

Positive: This hotel has wonderful rooms and grounds which are all well kept with a feeling of grandeur. We had a huge room with a balcony and a private pool virtually to ourselves. There are a couple of pools to give a feeling of privacy, especially when the hotel is less busy, as it was on our visit. The breakfast is good and generally the staff were attentive.
Negative: The hotel is a walk from the busy 'tourist strip' and so it would have been helpful to have a good bar to spend an evening to save tge walk or to retreat for a nightcap before bed. However, the bar staff, of which there were many, were not particularly attentive and at one point when a rucus seemed to occur within the staff, the Manager who had greeted us on arrival and was now sitting having drinks with customers, seemed to tell them off quite publically across us. One of the two evenings we decided to spend at the hotel was valentines night only to find this was packed out with guests from outside the hotel and all the tables were therefore pushed together so we were sharing with another couple who were hotel guests from Germany and unfortunately only one of them spoke english so it was a little uncomfortable at times. It was thoroughly unromantic and the most expensive night we had in Gambia. Just felt this could be a wonderful hotel, but the bar let's it down as it seems to be geared to making money from outside events rather than focusing on being a great bar in itself.

Positive: Peaceful Stay - We booked a week with the intention of moving for the second but decided to stay for another. Location on the edge of the strip suited us, the problems of power outs is a Gambia problem and only a couple for a short time, good coverage for WiFi but the attentive and friendly staff - too many to mention and the management team especially make the Coconut R a really great place to unwind and relax.
