Nestling on the hillside between the picturesque Roman villages of Bouteilles and St Paul de Lizonne, in a pretty and interesting corner of rural south west France, this former tobacco farm has been lovingly restored, retaining a traditional French country feel. Centred around a shaded courtyard, L’Erable is a charming conversion of one of the ancient single storey barns, sitting alongside the main farmhouse inhabited by ourselves.

Attractively furnished to compliment the many traditional country features inc. beams and mellow stone walls. French doors permit the sun and warmth to filter in from the courtyard, benefiting from two pretty terraces, back and front, both with comfortable furniture on which to enjoy the tranquil country surroundings.

Summary: Property was lovely - well equipped, comfortable beds, plenty of room to relax in the family room. Two of the bedrooms have air con but we didn’t always use it as the thick walls keep it fairly cool anyway. Great spaces for eating, both inside and out. Garden was a real bonus - plenty of space for kids to play - and views of the beautiful French countryside. We spent a lot of time by the pool - which was a great size and kept lovely and clean. Although it was hard to drag ourselves away from the pool there is plenty to do within about 30-60 minute drive. Lots of interesting towns to explore, and we did several kayaking trips and bike rides. There are also a number of river beaches which I think would be good with younger kids. Nigel and Lisa were absolutely brilliant hosts - really friendly, helpful and responsive, but not intrusive at all. We got some great tips about things to do/places to go which we would not have found otherwise. I do not have a bad thing to say about this place and would not hesitate to recommend it - we have just come back from 2 weeks there, and have had a wonderful relaxing holiday. Sent from my iPhone

Summary: Tucked away in its own grounds along with the owners house, and hidden from the road, makes this a real hidden gem and so private it seems like the rest of the world doesn't exist. Nigel & Lisa couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful throughout, and kept the place spotless, and the welcome 'goodies' were delicious - the pool was amazing, with a 10ft (approx) deep end but sloping up to shallows well suitable for children. The house & especially the kitchen was so well equipped and by far the best property we have stayed at in France, (and this is the 20th time over 30 years we have self catered there). The region itself is tranquil and beautiful, with so many lovely towns and villages within easy reach, our favourite being Aubeterre (one of the top 100 beautiful towns in France) where lunch is a must. There is a great Bolangerie (and well equipped Spar shop) just up the road in St. Saverin, with Riberac just 15mins away for supermarkets and a brilliant Friday market. Many thanks to Nigel & Lisa making our holiday so special, and look forward to seeing you again.

Summary: We had an amazing stay at Nigel and Lisa’s gîte. It had everything we needed and Nigel and Lisa were the perfect hosts. As a keen swimmer, the pool is the cleanest I’ve swam in and has a deep end for diving. It’s a very peaceful and relaxing environment and just a short drive to some pretty towns and river beaches. Our girls particularly enjoyed the beach at Lac Jamaye with its free kayak and paddle board activities. Coffee and milkshakes at the up cycling cafe in St Severin also went down a treat!! We holiday in France a lot and It’s the best property we have stayed in. Thank you!

Summary: Outstanding gite. Our family of five found only one 'problem' during our two-week stay. Was it the view? Nope. The view was lovely from the very peaceful terrace. Pool was large, warm, private and sheltered, with a great deep end, with also shaded areas to read and sunny areas to lounge on unbroken, comfy sun loungers and soak up the sun. Japanese garden quirky, with many other places outside to sit. Kitchen spacious and had everything we needed (save for one thing). Beds comfy and there was a range of pillows. The sitting room comfortably would fit six film watchers. The owners had just updated the TV and so we briefly seemed to lose satellite telly to watch the Women's Euros, but that problem was quickly remedied. But it would be best to ask Nigel about the tv/dvd situation. It was fine for us. We watched Netflix. Dining table comfortably fit six diners, as would the terrace area, which was well enough lit to play board games at night. There is enough area to play badminton and to kick a ball around. Local village of St Severin is 7 minutes by car and sells most things in a (very friendly) Spar shop, and has restaurants and bars (not tried). Riberac is 15 mins away for larger supermarkets and more restaurants and bars. Angouleme is 45 minutes away. Perigueux is also 45 mins away and prettier but slightly smaller than Angouleme. The market at Chalais on a Monday will set you up for cold meat and cheese, plus lots of cheap summer clothes, trinkets, English novels, good lunch. The owners of the gite are incredibly responsive, friendly and discreet. They dealt with all issues immediately (but the issues were not about anything wrong; there was never anything wrong). We and our three daughters (15, 17, 19) really enjoyed the very peaceful, roomy, friendly atmosphere and comfy gite. Wi-Fi good. Negatives? We've stayed in many French properties over the years and this was the best. It is more geared towards older teenagers than younger children. It didn't have as many outdoor games or indoor board games or books as some places, but we always come prepared anyway. The only criticism was the lack of cereal bowls. (They had pasta bowls but only one cereal bowl.) So, if it's a surfeit of cereal bowls you are after, try somewhere else. But if it is a very peaceful and comfortable gite representing excellent value for money with really good hosts that you would be genuinely tempted to return to again and again, try this place out.

Summary: We had a lovely stay with Nigel and Lisa. Two kind people who are very helpful. The house was perfect for the four of us. Our little kids (4,5 and 1,5) had a blast, especially the pool was a big bonus. Very quiet surroundings. We would definitely recommand.

Summary: After an horrendous journey we were so relieved to see L'Erable looked as pretty as it does it the pictures. Lovely welcome pack including some lovely white wine chilling nicely in the huge American style fridge, within 10 minutes we had forgotten all about the awful journey. As previous people have said the kitchen is so well equipped with every thing you could possibly need ! Lovely large pool which is not overlooked so nice and private. All in all a wonderful place to stay and we will be back :-) L & G - Surrey
