Positive: This is a huge, positive exception in an island that is now mostly lost to tourism (where many are just decided to make the maximum of money, and where the quality of service is not really seen as important by most - the idea is that if the client does not like something, never mind, somebody else will come ... this was my twelfth time in Faial between 2007 and 2024, so I believe to know what I speak about) - Casa Hurtere is personal, warm, the proprietor (Susana Oliveira) very friendly and attentive and giving a real individual effort (adapted to her guests). The apartment is full of small details; the equipment is very good and complete (compared to most apartments in both the Azores and the Portuguese mainland); it is to be found in a street of Angústias that is quite calm, as opposed to many others. A spectacular bay and beach (Praia do Porto Pim) are close by, it is not always suitable for swimming due to occasional jellyfish infestation, but the place remains incredible; the natural reserve of Monte Guía is also in the vicinity. The place is not cheap, but nothing in Faial really is, the price is adequate, and best value for the money. However, the individual character of the place and the wonderful ways in which the proprietor gives personal character to the apartment, is the most outstanding element of many.

Negative: There is little to be said. To be fair (and this is not a negative point, simply a reality), if someone came to Faial to have an apartment with marvelous views, Casa Hurtere would not have them. But nobody advertises that either. It is not about an apartment with views, but one of real coziness instead.

Summary: One of the rare cases nowadays of a wonderful, personal effort of a proprietor.

Positive: First thing I must say is that this was THE CLEANEST apartment I've ever stayed at, and I travel a lot. Everything was spotless. Very large space and comfortable, which had everything we needed, kitchen was fantastic! The hosts even had some small snacks and water on arrival which was really appreciated. The owners live in the flat above so key pickup was very easy, and were very friendly, sending messages with all instructions ahead of time! The location is just ideal too, we couldn't have chosen a better stay!

Negative: The only tiny thing I noted is that the OSB separating wall was a little smelly, but I am 7 months pregnant so may just be a little more sensitive.
