Positive: Stunning location and beautifully designed and comfortable bedroom. Fabulous restaurant next door with a gorgeous terrace, super friendly staff and innovative cooking (we couldn’t understand the poor Trip Advisor reviews) and lovely breakfast with delightful breakfast waitress.

Negative: We received a very friendly welcome by the mother of the owner but we had very little communication with anyone after then, despite trying several times to ask reception to book a taxi for us when it was clear the shuttle service to the train station wasn’t available. There were various “services” on offer but given our experience with the taxi we suspect we’d have had similar problems accessing those. The receptionist we did encounter at the Casa and in the restaurant sadly was rather unfriendly - we don’t speak Italian which I know doesn’t help but a smile would have gone a long way! We’re not needy guests but the lack of sense of hospitality left a bad taste in an otherwise beautiful place . Only other slight disappointment were the grounds. We’d booked the Casa hoping for a day of relaxation in the hills, with the ability to rest in some nice gardens. The setting was really stunning with beautiful views but the seating options were extremely limited - really only in full sun and you had to go through the busy restaurant to access it.

Summary: Stunning rooms and setting, but no sense of being looked after.

Positive: Beautiful area, house and room. Nicely equipped, very comfortable. Super clean and cozy.

Negative: It was a storm when we’ve been there and I wish we would have gotten a little heads up that the roads would be flooded and not safe to drive. Also the savoury breakfast option wasn’t vegetarian which I didn’t expect but it wasn’t a big deal.

Positive: The bed was very comfortable. The room was quite quirky and unique but after banging our heads on the beams a few times it lost its charm. The breakfast was really good, we had a choice of three different breakfasts, we tried all of them (we were there for three nights) they were all good, scrambled eggs, perfectly cooked, fruit, a selection of ham and cheese and homemade jam and toast. Freshly squeezed orange juice and very good tea and coffee. We ate dinner in the restaurant on our last night and it was superb, our waiter was very helpful and attentive and the food was sublime! It was on the pricey side but it was definitely worth it. The location of the hotel was perfect, set in a beautiful area with great views of the surrounding hills and only a 15 minute drive into Bologna, which was also a wonderful city. We were also able to bring our dog with us which was one of the main reasons for choosing this hotel.

Negative: When you arrive at the hotel the entrance is quite shabby and not very appealing. The manager was also not very welcoming and totally ignored me for five minutes when I first arrived. Her desk has a huge computer screen which acted like a barrier between us and this combined with her attitude made me feel like I was just another annoying guest that she had to deal with. She was like this for our entire stay, forcing a smile if she saw us but not once asking if we were enjoying our stay or if there was anything we needed etc, this would have been nice and would have made us feel more welcome. The room was quite cramped with beams everywhere that they had built stairs to go up and over to get from the bed to the bathroom. The beams in the ceiling by the bed were in a position that you had to duck under them to get to the clothes storage area behind the bed and my husband and I both bashed our heads on them a few times. The whirlpool bath plug didn’t work so we had to use the hand held shower head which wasn’t ideal. We could also hear what sounded like rats in the wall behind the bath which was very disconcerting!! The car park was full during the day from about midday onwards, used by people going to the restaurant, and so it was difficult to find anywhere to park especially in the evening after going into Bologna for dinner. Having read on their website that they provided a shuttle service (which we would pay for) into Bologna we thought that would be very useful but when I asked about it I was told they could possibly book me a taxi but it would be difficult. Again very unhelpful.

Summary: Comfortable bed, good location, excellent restaurant, but very grumpy and unwelcoming manager which ruined our stay.
