Positive: We enjoyed the friendly host and the good breakfasts. We really appreciated the closeness to the train and subway.

Negative: We didn’t enjoy the stairs and weren’t warned of them. My partner has had recent heart surgery and found the stairs difficult. I had to carry the cases up and didn’t enjoy that either. While the place is in a poor and grungy part of town it is safe and we didn’t feel threatened.

Positive: The hostess was very kind, the room was very nice, the design quirky, the breakfast was fresh, and there was even a daily room service. Right next to the TGV train station.

Negative: I liked everything about it. For people with less mobility a room on the third floor without elevator might be less comfortable but we had no issues with this.

Positive: A very characterful and friendly bed and breakfast. The location is very near the main station with a good 24-hour bakery almost next door. Our hosts gave us good ideas of places to visit and lent us a beach towel and gave us directions for a trip to Calanque de Sugiton. The room was fairly small but had everything we needed including a kettle.

Negative: Not an issue for us, but be aware that there is no lift and the stairs are a bit steep.

Positive: Casa Ortega is very cool. We loved the eclectic style and the quirky pieces that owner, Caroline, has collected. Breakfast is great, homemade granola and yoghurt together with fresh crossiants and coffee. We loved the conversations over breakfast with both Caroline and other guests. It felt like home from home.

Positive: Incredibly convenient for the train station. The room was stylishly decorated, the bed comfortable and the bedlinen great. Breakfast was delicious. The owner was kind, informative and human.

Negative: I personally loved everything about it. However, it may not be your type of thing - it’s not corporate with 24 hour reception, there’s no lift and for some the area may be off-putting.

Positive: A great accommodation very close to the Gare de Marseille Saint-Charles. Big airy room with lots of character. Comfortable bed. The host was lovely and friendly. Breakfast was plentiful. It would be good to have a mini-fridge in the room to store milk etc. Otherwise, it was perfect.

Positive: Everything about the Casa Ortega has real character, from the red walls and stairways to the vintage flamenco LPs framed on the walls. The breakfast area is charming, and the owner Caroline engages with her guests during breakfast -- she gave me great tips on local restaurants and customs. The Casa Ortega has a personal, welcoming atmosphere, much appreciated in a city this big. My room was a pleasant, quiet retreat from all the heat and excitement of Marseille after long days of touring the city. The hotel is a convenient few minutes' walk from the train station but just far enough away from it, too. It's only about a 15-minute walk down the nearby Rue de Athene to the center of town and the Old Port. Highly recommended!

Negative: There is occasionally noise from the street outside, but it died down before midnight and I wasn't much disturbed by it.

Summary: Unique character and a welcoming atmosphere make this a great base from which to explore Marseille.
