Positive: The staff were very nice and the beds were very comfortable. There was free parking and they were able to substitute a glass of milk with orange juice for my lactose intolerance during breakfast. The check-in/check-out procedures were easy and straightforward. The yukata were a nice touch and the room had working aircon and mini-fridge. The traditional breakfast was delicious and contained a lot of tofu and vegetables.

Negative: We set our google maps to the Aso Hotel Ichibankan. We pulled in to see a very purple building and a rocky parking lot. Upon parking at the Ichibankan building, we were guided to the front of the hotel by a man who had a list of people and told us that he wasn't sure if we were in this building or in the Nibankan (second building). We were carrying all our luggage and then he said that he would inquire, but by time we got to the entrance, he decided by himself that we were not going into this hotel. Meanwhile, two Japanese women with suitcases went directly into the hotel with no word from him. We were told to go to the Nibankan building, so we carried our luggage back to our car and then drove down the street to the other white building. This seemed really inefficient and there should be more guidance or transparency in this process. The parking lot of the other hotel was in a rocky, overgrown field and we had to walk through a sketchy fence to get to the hotel. Our bathroom had some orange grime/mold on the floors. The spa (onsen) was very outdated and many of the tiles inside the bath were falling off. The pictures of the rooms on Booking.com did not reflect the onsen or room that we had in the Nibankan hotel, so I am assuming that the pictures are mostly from the Ichibankan hotel. Our room had a faux-leather sofa and very scratched wooden tea table. The room came with only two towels and no towel for the vanity sink. The bathroom floor mat was also falling apart. The vending machines were a bit overpriced and we paid ¥350 for a tall can of beer. Overall, I felt that the expectations of this hotel were not met and we paid ¥20,000 for one night when the total value is much lower.
