Summary: Floors uneven, very tricky to walk across the room. No hot water no soap, etc tissues... nothing & no where to put clothing/luggage... Breakfast= egg burnt on bottom raw on top. Same as I cooked my first one @ a kinder age. No coffeeor tea available, no napkins. Pushed into an upgrade...

Summary: Staying at Appelby castle was an experience we combined it with a performance of the Handlebards in the grounds. The owner Sally is lovely and Peter manager slways helpful. We stayed in what was the ' servants quarters ' on the top floor. Unfortunately it had a parapet window so no views but the room was spacious the bed comfortable , nice linen and towels and a good shower. The floor in the bedroom and to the shower was sloped so not recommended for anyone with mobility issues the room was up 3 flights of stairs the last ones quite steep. We didn't have dinner but had breakfast . It was ok. With a bit of tweaking it could be v good . Ie better choices of cereal , fruit and availabity of yogurt. English breakfast was fine but would have been nice to have toast and jams after. Coffee was Ok. At about £16pp it was expensive for what was available. The castle is tired but has so much potential . We were disappointed that the museum in the tower was closed . With a little bit of tweaking the experience could be so much better but we enoyed our stay and would consider staying again

Summary: We had a magical stay at this castle! The owner and staff were exceptional, and we enjoyed the tour, the meal and everything about this grand old property. One of the highlights of our trip to England!

Summary: The building is old. Its was clean and comfy for what it is. We knew that and accepted that at the time of booking, its was authentic. The food was amazing !!! The drinks ovepriced so the bill was a shocker if honest, the games ropm little run down and darts broken but a nice stay overall.

Summary: Appleby Castle is a special destination, steeped in history that you can experience first hand. Staff care deeply about the castle and we thoroughly enjoyed the piano playing during the meal and the history talk after. Having read some of the other reviews, we can’t say we experienced any of the negatives and thought Peter, Sally (and chef!) did a great job it being just them running the castle.

Summary: We had a wonderful stay at Appleby Castle. We were made so welcome by hosts Sally and Peter. The room was adequate for a castle. Dinner was superb, a of mix of prawn and salmon starter followed by main course of garlic chicken. The setting was the in the beautiful dining room. We were the only ones dining, and had the chef cooking solely for ourselves !! Peter played the piano as we dined. Sally could not have been nicer as we chatted. We went to the TV lounge after dinner for drinks. A thoroughly lovely stay.

Summary: Whilst I am sure this kind of property appeals to many, it wasn't what we were expecting. We appreciate it is a castle first, then hotel, but we have stayed in plenty of castles that still offered a very good hotel experience. Our room, apparently an upgraded one [we booked a superior kind] was small and very cold. The host promised us a heater, but it never materialised. The rooms have no TV ["because it is a castle"], but still have TV points in the room. Despite the hotels.com description, there is no spa and there is no hot tub, not that that aided our choice in the first place, but putting it out there for others; they don't exist.
